"Phil King keeps making smart, and surprising work. These "Football" paintings are more of that. What at first appears fast and fun with a seeming light touch turns out to contain: confidently quirky and sensibly serviceable pockets and constructions of spaces placed and knit across a surface; essentialistically abbreviated and descriptive abstracted drawing that gets at the "bones" of a figure, landscape, thought, or feeling; and supremely spirited and direct brushwork and gesture that is unlabored and open. With workmanlike color and the occasional hole cut into the support, he demonstrates a playful yet serious engagement with painting's broad history and skillful knowledge of its components and intricacies."
